Detailed Synopsis

 

The disappearance of a horse whisperer in Newton Magna brings Barnaby face to face with old adversary Melvyn Stockard, now reinvented as the village squire. But when a villager's body is pulled out of the well, Barnaby is convinced Stockard is somehow involved.

An Irish stranger vanishes after being knocked down by Dr Burgess , on his way home from an evening's drinking at the riding school owned by glamorous Spaniard Francesca Ward.

Barnabydiscovers the visitor is Sean O'Connell, a disgraced vet turned horse whisperer, then his search brings him face to face with old adversary Melvyn Stockard.

Now the squire of Newton Magna, Stockard claims he is reformed, but Barnaby is not so sure, especially when he hears the former villain is involved with Francesca.

Stockard's daughter Julie is about to be married, but when a body pulled from the well is found to be the father of her best man Noel Wooliscroft, the wedding looks in jeopardy. The dead man had been having an affair with Julie's future mother-in-law and the couple were thought to have fled abroad.

It's no secret that Stockard is opposed to the marriage - but would he murder to stop it going ahead? And what was the horse whisperer doing in Newton Magna?
