DEATH OF A HOLLOW MAN
In the village of Ferne Basset, Agnes Gray, a former linguist who amassed an unlikely fortune is found drowned after a violent attack.
Meanwhile at the Corn Exchange in Causton DCI Tom Barnaby is painting scenery for the Causton Amateur Dramatic Society's production of "Amadeus". There he is exposed to a backstage world of intrigue, passion and gossip. The play's director, Harold Winstanley is an opinionated bully and a poseur who tyrannises his wife, Doris but is unable to dominate his leading man, Esslyn Carmichael.
Deidre Tibbs the shy but talented stage manager is a particular victim of Winstanley's venom. Then a second murder brings a whole new meaning to the term "corpsing".
