Rye is famous for directing Dennis Potter's last two shows 'Karoke' and 'Cold Lazarus'. These were shown in 1996 after Potter's death and both starred Albert Finney and Roy Hudd. It was first time that the BBC and C4 joined together to make two programmes.

Rye also directed other Potter dramas like 'Lipstick on my Collar' with Ewan McGregor and 'Midnight Movie'. He started in children's TV then moved on to epoisodes of 'Casualty', 'Poirot', 'Silent Witness', 'Chandler & Co', 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky', 'Big Women' and 'Sunburn'. He also diected the recent ITV version of 'Oliver Twist' with Julie Walters, Robert Lindsay, Michael Kitchen and Lindsay Duncan.
