THE MAID IN SPLENDOUR
Baffled by the murder, Barnaby and Scott start their investigations by interviewing Jamie's colleagues at The Maid. They hope they can explain why Jamie was visiting a ruined cabin in the woods and who would want to see him dead? They learn that Jamie had a crush on a co-worker Bella Monday, but she was seeing someone else.
Candles and a bottle of wine found at the cottage suggest that the cabin had recently been used as a romantic rendezvous. Two sets of fingerprints are lifted from the wine bottle and to Barnaby's surprise, one set matches Stephen Bannerman, the other belongs to a woman. Stephen and his wife Lorna recently took over ownership of The Maid after Stephen's father retired. Their plans to renovate have caused an upheaval among some of the locals, including Jamie's father.
Unbeknown to his wife and father, Stephen secretly had his own plans for the pub and was actually in negotiations with a local property developer Laurence Haggard, to sell. But someone else must have been aware of his plans. While on his way to see Laurence, Stephen is shot dead, the murderer using the same gun that killed Jamie.
Barnaby and Scott weigh up the possibilities. Was Jamie blackmailing Stephen? Who would want to stop Stephen's plans from going ahead? Could the two scenarios be linked? With no-one connected to the pub being completely honest with Barnaby and Scott, everyone is a suspect. The race is on to unravel the mystery and expose the murderer.
